Ubuntu 16.04 LTS VMware image with Tools
The latest long-term service edition of Ubuntu, the Xenial Xerus 16.04 LTS, has just come out. This completely configured VM is the easiest way to have a look at it. To make things even more convenient, we have installed VMware Tools already. You just need to download the Xenial Xerus!

This is the official or primary version of Ubuntu's 16.04 distro. Ubuntu's master Xenial Xerus gets powered at the surface by their own development, the Unity desktop, and comes with a long-term support of five years.
Unity offers a new work flow and has no longer a start-menu or a task switcher. If you want these, we recommend our Ubuntu 16.04 image with MATE and VMware Tools. The MATE desktop image offers the classic experience, but has only three years of Ubuntu support, which is still more than the typical two years of their intermediate versions.
MATE is also faster than Ubuntu Unity. So, remember to set the processor number of this Unity-based VM to the physical maximum and reserve enough memory for it.
On the other hand, we have tweaked the Xenial Xerus to run faster, for instance with the compiz settings manager. Is a Xerus is clumsy dinosaur? No, it is the opposite, a ground squirrel. Our virtualized Xerus seems to oscillate between both!
We also made the download a tad lighter and removed the two largest preinstalled applications. But you can reinstall them easily with the package manager Synaptic or apt-get. Even the Ubuntu Software Center would do it. The large community repositories, those with the 40000+ packages, are already enabled.

Lubuntu 16.04 LTS is our speedy, compact, and convenient Ubuntu LTS image. Hierarchical start menu and task switcher meet a full set of light applications. All that comes with VMware Tools that seem to have installed best into this Lubuntu VM.
Ubuntu 16.04 LTS MATE is the successor of the classic Gnome 2.0. Like Lubuntu is has start menus and a task switcher, but it also has different looks that mimic Windows, Mac, and also Unity. Definitely worth a try.
Apps included in this Ubuntu 16.04 LTS VMware image: Firefox, Synaptic, compiler chain, and some more tools. VMware Tools are also installed.
